HARIDHA P193 15-Apr-2024

.NET 9, the successor to.NET 8, places a strong emphasis on cloud-native apps and performance. It will be supported for 18 months as an STS release. You may get.NET 9 here.

The technical team has begun posting preview updates for.NET 9 on GitHub Discussions. That's an excellent location to ask questions and give input on the release.

What

.NET Runtime

The.NET 9 runtime offers performance enhancements such as quicker exception handling, inlining for Native AOT, and loop and PGO optimisations.

.NET Libraries

The.NET 9 libraries offer enhancements to serialization, cryptography, LINQ, reflection emission, and other features.

.Net SDK

The.NET 9 SDK offers enhancements to the terminal logger, tool roll-forward, and unit testing capabilities.

Following the successful release of.NET 8, Microsoft has already released the first preview of.NET 9 and provided a roadmap for its development, so here's the list.

Focus

  • Cloud-native development includes improved support for Kubernetes, managed database and cache services (such as Redis), and streamlined deployment methods.
  • Intelligent app development requires deeper integration with AI capabilities, such as access to OpenAI and OSS models via libraries and documentation.
  • Productivity Enhancements: New features in Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code through.NET Aspiring to improve the development experience.
  • Performance and security: Continuous investments in improving performance and implementing strong security measures.

Additional information

  • .NET 9 is now in the Preview stage, with new features being developed and introduced regularly. The official website and GitHub repository allow you to download the preview and learn more about the roadmap.
  • Release date: The final release is scheduled for November 2024 at the.NET Conference.
  • Microsoft has identified specific areas in each of the categories listed above, such as DATAS GC improvements for ASP.NET Core apps. You may discover more information on their blog article and other places.
